ODIONGAN, GINGOOG CITY

Odiongan, one of the seventy-nine (79) barangays (village) in the City of Gingoog, is one of its oldest settlements. Cited as "Oyungan" in the old maps of Padre Murillo Velarde, it is an old Spanish "rancheria" or farming village. Odiongan was cited in the Jesuit Letters, the Dapitan and Balingasag Missions. The missionary father reported that Odiongan is a settlement at the mouth of a river, near Banua-Banua (obvious reference to the present day Barangay Anakan) and has "roads, a church as well as a goverment house..." Some of its few landmarks are the island at the mouth of Odiongan River, the columns of the old Magsaysay Bridge, and the old Catholic chapel. Odiongan celebrates its barangay fiesta every 19th day of March with St. Joseph as its patron saint.
