Political Partisanship: Its Deleterious Effects

Political partisanship has long been a feature of democratic societies. In the Philippines, where democracy thrives on elections, public discourse, and civic participation, taking sides in politics is inevitable. Citizens naturally align themselves with leaders, ideologies, and programs they believe will improve the nation. However, when political loyalty becomes excessive, blind, and deeply personal, it produces harmful consequences that weaken social harmony, distort governance, and divide the Filipino people. The growing culture of political tribalism in the Philippines has become one of the major obstacles to national unity and progress. One of the most visible negative effects of taking sides in politics is the division it creates among Filipinos. Political disagreements that should remain within the bounds of healthy democratic debate often evolve into hostility and hatred. Families quarrel during elections, friendships are destroyed over political opinions, and communities ...

The State of Education in the Philippines: Insights from EDCOM II

The Philippine education system stands at a critical crossroads. According to the findings of the Second Congressional Commission on Education or EDCOM II, the country is facing what experts now describe as a “learning crisis” — one that threatens not only the future of Filipino learners but also the nation’s long-term economic and social development. Created through Republic Act No. 11899 in 2022, EDCOM II was tasked to conduct a comprehensive national review of Philippine education after the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Over three years, the commission studied the entire education sector—from early childhood to higher education and technical-vocational training—and produced a series of landmark reports detailing the alarming realities confronting Philippine education today. ( Wikipedia ) A System in Crisis One of the most disturbing findings of EDCOM II is the severe decline in student proficiency across grade levels. Recent national assessments revealed that s...

Worrying About Nothing

"S ince wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed ". But no, I am not going to agonize on this gargantuan topic. What I will be dealing now is how men worry too much about something that does not even remotely appear to be existent. Kumbaga, parang lahat ng posibilidad nailahad na at sa kalaunan ay parang naging totoo na. There was a story in my high school world literature book which tells a story on how the first war happened. Two tribes live on opposite sides of a big, wide river. The watchmen from each side closely observed each other's movements. One day, the chieftain of Tribe A ordered his warriors to whet their spears and bolos since these have become rusty out of lack of use. So the warriors of Tribe A went to the river so they could wash their weapons and be able to whet these on the rocky outcrops near the river bank. The flock of men alarmed the watchmen of Tribe B. One of them reported to...

New Year's Resolutions Versus Procrastination

Awareness of a problem is halfway to its solution. Not so with new year's resolution. Every year, people are told to list things they want to do (or get rid of). Commonly listed are: 1. Dieting. Eat much during Christmas and New Year's eve and start dieting first day of the year. Better said (or listed) than done. 2. Save money. Splurge on the holiday buys and start saving the the new year unfolds. In most cases, the one concerned is insolvent at the start of the year, having spent the last centavo for the two consecutive celebrations. 3. Changing one's bad habits. Doing it is as hard as a camel enters the eye of a needle. So what's new and what is there to start with? They say the procrastination is "putting off for tomorrow what one can do today." Yeah, the so-called manana habit. "Bukas na lang ako mag-diet."Bukas na lang ako mag-save."Bukas na lang kita mamahalin (uhrrmmmm)." Procrastination happens when there are a lot of...
