New Year's Resolutions Versus Procrastination

Awareness of a problem is halfway to its solution. Not so with new year's resolution.

Every year, people are told to list things they want to do (or get rid of). Commonly listed are:

1. Dieting. Eat much during Christmas and New Year's eve and start dieting first day of the year. Better said (or listed) than done.

2. Save money. Splurge on the holiday buys and start saving the the new year unfolds. In most cases, the one concerned is insolvent at the start of the year, having spent the last centavo for the two consecutive celebrations.

3. Changing one's bad habits. Doing it is as hard as a camel enters the eye of a needle.

So what's new and what is there to start with?

They say the procrastination is "putting off for tomorrow what one can do today." Yeah, the so-called manana habit. "Bukas na lang ako mag-diet."Bukas na lang ako mag-save."Bukas na lang kita mamahalin (uhrrmmmm)."

Procrastination happens when there are a lot of distractions along the way. Studying while watching TV is not serving the purpose. You are more glued to the set than to the printed page of your book. Distractions dominate and cause one's purpose to be defeated: Having not retained anything from what you read. Having committed computational errors because attention to details have been re-routed.

So what shall we do to avoid distractions? Simple. Just have the courage not to entertain distractions. Easier said than done. But we've got to do it or else..... Then what?

Just have the courage and commitment to pursue your goals. Do it relentlessly and you can only do it relentlessly if you have enough will power to kick those distractions off.
